Walking

Typical age: 1 year

Those first wobbly independent steps are a milestone parents never forget. Most babies take their first steps between 9 and 15 months, with 12 months being the average. Walking opens up a whole new world of exploration.

Signs to Look For

  • Takes several steps without holding onto anything
  • Cruises confidently along furniture
  • Can stand independently for several seconds
  • Walks with a wide stance and arms out for balance

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Not walking by 18 months
  • Consistently walks on toes only
  • Walks with a significant limp or asymmetry
  • Previously walked but has stopped
