Motor Skills

Pincer Grasp

Typical age: 9 months

The pincer grasp — picking up small objects between the thumb and forefinger — is a fine motor milestone that enables self-feeding and later skills like writing. It typically develops around 9-10 months.

Signs to Look For

  • Picks up small objects between thumb and index finger
  • Can pick up individual cereal pieces or puffs
  • Points at objects with index finger
  • Explores objects with more precision

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Still raking at objects with whole hand after 12 months
  • Cannot pick up small objects by 12 months
  • Doesn't use both hands for activities
