Sitting Up

Typical age: 6 months

Independent sitting is a game-changer — it frees up your baby's hands for play and exploration. Most babies sit with support around 5 months and independently by 6-7 months. Strong core muscles and balance make this possible.

Signs to Look For

  • Sits with support and minimal wobbling
  • Sits independently for several seconds
  • Uses hands for balance (tripod sitting)
  • Can reach for toys while sitting without toppling

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Cannot sit with support by 6 months
  • Cannot sit independently by 9 months
  • Consistently falls to one side
  • Appears very stiff or very floppy when seated
