Motor Skills

Running and Climbing

Typical age: 18 months

By 18 months, toddlers are becoming more confident on their feet and start running (with that adorable toddle) and climbing on furniture, stairs, and playground equipment. This shows advancing gross motor skills and spatial awareness.

Signs to Look For

  • Runs with a stiff, wide-legged gait
  • Climbs onto furniture and low playground equipment
  • Walks up stairs holding a hand or railing
  • Kicks a ball forward (sometimes!)

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Cannot walk steadily by 18 months
  • Has significant difficulty with stairs by 24 months
  • Frequently falls compared to peers
  • Shows regression in motor abilities
