Sledding is one of the most popular winter activities for children in Scandinavia. From around one year old, the smallest ones can join their first ride down the slope - sitting safely in the lap of an adult.
But the selection of sledges, sled mats, wheeled sleds and pulks can be overwhelming. This guide helps you choose the right sledding equipment for your child's age, and gives you the safety tips you need to make sledding safe.
Five Types of Sledding Equipment - What Suits Your Child?
Sledges (Plastic Sled)
The classic sledge is a simple plastic plate, often with handles and a raised edge. It is light, inexpensive and easy to carry with you. The sledge gives high speed and is most fun on prepared slopes with even surfaces.
Sledges are best for children from 3-4 years old who can sit steadily and hold on by themselves.
Important: Sledges without brakes can reach high speeds. Choose slopes without obstacles at the bottom, and avoid icy surfaces with the youngest children.
Sled Mat
A sled mat is a soft, padded mat that the child sits on. It is light to roll up and take with you in a bag. The sled mat gives lower speed than a sledge and is easier to steer with your feet.
Sled mats work well for children from 2-3 years old. The soft surface makes the ride more comfortable for small children.
Wheeled Sled
The wheeled sled combines a sled with a steering wheel and brakes. The child can steer the direction with the wheel and brake with a lever. This gives children a sense of control that makes sledding safer.
Wheeled sleds are recommended from 3 years and up. Choose a model with a low center of gravity for better stability.
