First Words

Typical age: 1 year

Hearing your baby's first intentional word is one of parenting's most magical moments. Around 12 months, most babies say 1-3 words with meaning — usually 'mama', 'dada', or 'no'. This marks the true beginning of verbal communication.

Signs to Look For

  • Says 'mama' or 'dada' with meaning (not just babbling)
  • May have 1-3 other words like 'no', 'bye', or a pet's name
  • Uses consistent sounds for specific objects
  • Understands many more words than they can say

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • No words at all by 16 months
  • Doesn't seem to understand simple words
  • Lost words they previously used
  • No babbling or gestures by 12 months
