Two-Word Phrases

Typical age: 2 years

Around 24 months, toddlers begin combining two words into simple phrases like 'more milk', 'daddy go', or 'big truck'. This marks a leap from labeling to true communication — expressing wants, observations, and ideas.

Signs to Look For

  • Combines two words meaningfully ('more juice', 'mama up')
  • Has a vocabulary of 50+ words
  • Follows simple two-step instructions
  • Names objects in pictures when asked

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Fewer than 50 words by 24 months
  • No two-word combinations by 24 months
  • Speech is very difficult for familiar people to understand
  • Loss of previously acquired words
