Cooing Begins!

Your baby is much more alert now. Days are filled with sounds, smiles, and long stretches of eye contact. Your little one "responds" when you talk.

Development

  • Makes sounds: "Aah," "goo" — your baby responds to your voice
  • Smiles intentionally at familiar faces
  • Lifts head 45 degrees during tummy time and holds it briefly
  • Discovers their hands — stares at them and brings them to their mouth
  • Mental leap (week 8): Discovers patterns, and may be fussier for a few days

Growth

  • Boys: Average 11.5 lbs / 23.2 in (5.2 kg / 59 cm)
  • Girls: Average 11.0 lbs / 22.4 in (5.0 kg / 57 cm)

Sleep

  • 14–16 hours per day
  • Longer wake windows, often 1–1.5 hours at a time
  • May sleep 4–5 hours in a row at night

Feeding

  • 6–8 feeding sessions per day — your baby feeds more quickly now
  • Growth spurt commonly occurs around 6–8 weeks
  • Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 micrograms) daily

Good to Know

  • Hands are a discovery: Your baby stares at them, brings them together, and sucks on their fingers
  • Your baby now clearly distinguishes between familiar and unfamiliar faces
  • Smiling and "conversations" with your baby support language development

Activity Tips

Hold a colorful rattle in front of your baby and move it slowly from side to side. Watch how your baby tracks it with their eyes — and maybe tries to reach for it.

Tip: Talk to your baby a lot. Narrate what you're doing — tone and rhythm build the foundation for language.
