The Laughter Arrives!
A wonderful age — your baby laughs out loud for the first time! More alert, more active, and clearly engaged. Personality is shining through.
Development
- Laughs out loud intentionally — not just smiling, but laughing at something you do
- Reaches for toys deliberately, no longer just reflexively
- Lifts head and chest well during tummy time, supporting themselves on their arms
- Active babbling: "ba-ba," "ah-goo" — trying to "talk" back to you
- Mental leap (week 12): Smoother movements; may be fussier for a few days
Growth
- Boys: Average 13.2 lbs / 24.8 in (6.0 kg / 63 cm)
- Girls: Average 12.8 lbs / 24.0 in (5.8 kg / 61 cm)
Sleep
- 12–15 hours per day — more awake time during the day
- Your baby begins producing their own melatonin, so nighttime sleep gets longer
- A dark room and a consistent bedtime routine help more and more
Feeding
- 6–8 feeding sessions per day — more regular meals
- Your baby feeds faster and takes larger amounts per session
- Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 micrograms) daily
Good to Know
- Well-baby visit: Around 2–4 months, your pediatrician will do a developmental check-up with vaccinations per your local schedule — typically DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, and rotavirus
- Your baby "converses": When they make a sound, respond! Back-and-forth exchanges build early language
- Many babies find a rhythm to their day around this time
Activity Tips
Mirror play! Hold your baby in front of a mirror and watch their reaction when they discover "the other baby." Babies love faces — especially their own.
