Cognitive

Object Permanence

Typical age: 8 months

Object permanence is the understanding that things still exist even when hidden from view. This cognitive breakthrough usually emerges around 8 months and is why peek-a-boo becomes so exciting — your baby now understands you're still there.

Signs to Look For

  • Looks for a toy you've hidden under a blanket
  • Enjoys and understands peek-a-boo
  • Searches for dropped objects
  • Looks toward the door when a parent leaves

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • Shows no interest in finding hidden objects by 12 months
  • Doesn't look for toys that fall out of sight
  • No interest in peek-a-boo or hiding games
