Happy 2nd Birthday!
Your two-year-old speaks in sentences, runs, jumps, and has a rich imaginary world. From baby to toddler — what a journey!
Development
- Speaks in 2–3 word sentences: "Mama, look!", "Want milk", "Big car"
- 200+ words in vocabulary
- Runs, jumps, kicks a ball — gross motor skills are well developed
- Pretend play blossoms: Creates stories, role plays, imagines scenarios
- "Myself!" — wants to do everything alone (dressing, eating, washing)
- Big emotions: Tantrums are normal, the brain that regulates emotions is still maturing
Growth
- Boys: Average 12.3 kg / 88 cm (27.1 lb / 34.6 in)
- Girls: Average 11.8 kg / 86 cm (26.0 lb / 33.9 in)
Sleep
- 11–14 hours per day (nighttime sleep 10–12 hours + 1 nap)
- Some drop the midday nap, but most still need it
- May protest going to bed. Consistent routines help
Feeding
- 3 meals + 2 snacks — family food
- Pickiness can peak now. Continue offering varied food without pressure
- Eats with spoon and fork (a bit messy, but getting better)
- Max 500 ml / 17 oz dairy products per day (including yogurt and cheese)
- Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 mcg) daily (the AAP recommends through at least age 4)
Good to Know
- 2-year well-baby checkup: Your pediatrician will assess language (at least 50 words, two-word phrases), motor skills, and social development
- Potty training: Many children show interest around age 2. Signs: tells you about a wet diaper, sits still, shows interest in the potty. Don't push — let your child lead the way
- Screen time: The WHO and AAP recommend no more than 1 hour of screen time per day for 2–4 year olds. Under age 2, screen time should be avoided (except video calling). Choose calm, age-appropriate content
- Tantrums and big emotions are normal — the part of the brain that regulates emotions is not yet fully developed
Activity Tip
Build with blocks and Duplo! Two-year-olds love to build, knock down, and build again. Practices problem-solving, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness.
