Why?

Your 23-month-old balances on one foot, asks "why?" about everything, and has very clear opinions on most things. Next month, your baby turns 2!

Development

  • Balances on one foot for a brief moment — tries again and again
  • Asks "Why?" — curiosity is insatiable, and questions come in a steady stream
  • Strong preferences and opinions: Wants to decide clothes, food, order of events, and who does what
  • Longer sentences: 3–4 words, and grammar is starting to take shape
  • Draws with intention — can say what the drawing represents (even if it looks like scribbles to adults)
  • Masters stairs up and down (still holding the railing)
  • Role play becomes complex: Full scenarios play out with dolls, cars, and stuffed animals

Growth

  • Boys: Average 12.0 kg / 87 cm (26.5 lb / 34.3 in)
  • Girls: Average 11.5 kg / 85.5 cm (25.4 lb / 33.7 in)

Sleep

  • 11–14 hours per day (nighttime sleep 10–12 hours + 1 nap)
  • The midday nap is still important for most, even if the resistance is strong
  • Children who don't sleep a nap can have a calm quiet time with books instead
  • Dreams and nightmares can occur — comfort and security are what matters most

Feeding

  • 3 meals + 2 snacks — family food
  • Strong food preferences are common — your baby may refuse food they liked last week
  • Don't make separate food for your baby. Offer family food, and let your baby decide what and how much to eat
  • Involve your baby in cooking — it increases interest in food
  • Whole milk to drink (max 500 ml / 17 oz dairy products per day)
  • Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 mcg) daily

Good to Know

  • "Why?" is wonderful: Answer patiently and simply. When you don't know, say "Let's find out together!"
  • Strong opinions are healthy: Your baby is developing identity and independence. Pick your battles — let your baby decide where possible (clothes, toys), but be clear on what's important (safety, bedtime)
  • Potty training: Many babies show signs of readiness now — tells you about a wet diaper, shows interest in the potty, can stay dry for periods. Don't push — let your baby set the pace
  • The 2-year well-baby visit is coming soon: Your pediatrician will check language (at least 50 words, two-word phrases), motor skills, and social development

Activity Tip

Balance play! Create an "obstacle course" in the living room with cushions to walk on, a board to balance along (flat on the floor), and a chair to climb over. Your baby practices balance, coordination, and strength — and has an absolute blast.
