Breastfeeding Class: Prepare for a Good Start

Babysential TeamMarch 12, 20262 min read

A breastfeeding class gives you knowledge and confidence before your baby arrives. Women who prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy experience fewer problems and often continue breastfeeding for longer.

You do not need to wait until your baby is born to learn. Here is an overview of which classes are available in Norway, what you learn, and how to get ready at home.

Why take a breastfeeding class?

Breastfeeding is natural, but that does not mean it happens by itself. Most people need some guidance to get off to a good start. A breastfeeding class gives you:

  • Knowledge of technique - latch, breastfeeding positions, and signs of good breastfeeding
  • Reduced risk of problems - women who have taken a class less often experience sore nipples and engorgement
  • More confidence - you know what to do already in the delivery room
  • Tools for solving challenges - you recognize problems early and know where to get help

According to the Norwegian Health Directorate's guidelines for infant nutrition, breastfeeding is recommended as the only nutrition for the first six months. Good preparation increases the chance of succeeding with this.

Women who have taken a breastfeeding class have higher breastfeeding rates after six weeks. The class does not need to be long - even a few hours can make a noticeable difference.

When should you take a breastfeeding class?

Most midwives recommend a breastfeeding class in weeks 30-35 of pregnancy. By then you are far enough along for breastfeeding to feel relevant, but not so close to your due date that you risk giving birth before the class.

Some classes are part of birth preparation courses and cover breastfeeding as one of several topics. Others are dedicated breastfeeding classes that go deeper into technique and problem-solving.

Book the class early. Popular classes fill up quickly, especially in larger cities.
