Frequently asked
What is a birth plan?
A birth plan is a written summary of your preferences for labor, delivery, and the first hours after birth. It is meant to spark conversation with your care team — it is not a contract. Most providers welcome a one-page birth plan to understand what matters to you.
How long should a birth plan be?
One page is the gold standard. Care teams move fast during labor, so brevity helps. Bloom's wizard keeps your plan focused on the choices that matter most.
Do hospitals follow birth plans?
Most hospitals try to honor your birth plan when it is medically safe. ACOG recommends sharing your plan with your care team during a prenatal visit so they can flag anything that may need a backup option.
When should I write my birth plan?
Most people start drafting their birth plan around weeks 32–36 of pregnancy, after they have toured their birth setting and discussed pain relief options with their provider. You can revisit and update it any time.
What if my plan changes during labor?
That is expected. A birth plan reflects your wishes at one point in time. If your team recommends a change for safety reasons, your plan helps them know what still matters to you — for example, partner presence or delayed cord clamping if a c-section becomes necessary.
Should I include c-section preferences?
Yes. About 1 in 3 births in the United States ends in a cesarean. Including your c-section preferences (partner present in the OR, lower drape, skin-to-skin in recovery) makes sure your wishes are honored even if your birth path changes.
Can I share my plan with my care team?
Yes. Bloom lets you download your birth plan as a one-page PDF or email it directly. Bring a printed copy to your hospital bag and share a digital version with your midwife, doula, or OB during a prenatal visit.
