Laughing

Typical age: 4 months

That first real laugh is unforgettable. Around 4 months, babies start laughing out loud — a sign of developing social awareness and emotional expression. Laughter shows your baby understands surprise and anticipation.

Signs to Look For

  • Laughs out loud when tickled or surprised
  • Giggles during peek-a-boo or bouncing games
  • Squeals with delight during play
  • Laughs in response to funny sounds or faces

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace. However, talk to your doctor if you notice:

  • No laughter or vocal delight by 6 months
  • Rarely makes sounds or seems disengaged during play
  • Doesn't respond to playful interaction
