Crawling Is Coming!

Your baby is rocking back and forth on all fours — crawling is just around the corner! The whole house becomes an exploration zone, and baby-proofing is no longer optional.

Development

  • Rocking on all fours — some babies are already crawling
  • Object permanence: Understands that things exist even when hidden. Loves peekaboo!
  • Increasingly better grasping and picks up smaller objects
  • Understands "no", even if they don't always comply
  • Babbling with meaning: Uses different sounds in different situations

Growth

  • Boys: Average 18.3 lbs / 27.6 in (8.3 kg / 70 cm)
  • Girls: Average 17.0 lbs / 26.8 in (7.7 kg / 68 cm)

Sleep

  • 11–14 hours per day (nighttime sleep 10–11 hours + 2 naps)
  • New motor skills can disrupt sleep — your baby "practices" in the crib
  • Stranger anxiety in the evening is common

Feeding

  • 2–3 solid food meals in addition to breast milk or formula
  • Coarser texture — mashed food, not just smooth purée
  • Finger foods: Soft pieces your baby can hold themselves (banana, avocado, cooked carrot)
  • Water in a cup with meals
  • Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 micrograms) daily

Good to Know

  • Baby-proof now: Outlet covers, stair gates, locks on cabinets with hazardous items
  • Everything at floor level is at risk from a mobile baby
  • Not all babies crawl — some bottom-shuffle or roll instead. All are normal

Activity Tips

Peekaboo! Hide your face or a toy under a blanket and let your baby find it. Your baby now understands that things don't disappear — and finds it hilarious.
