Grasping Champion!
Everything within reach gets grabbed, investigated, and put in the mouth. Your baby transfers toys between hands and babbling explodes with new sounds.
Development
- Transfers toys from hand to hand — an important fine motor milestone
- Sits with support and holds their back fairly straight
- Rolls both ways — from tummy to back and back again
- Consonants arrive: "ba-ba," "da-da," "ma-ma" (without meaning yet)
- Recognizes their own name and turns when you call
Growth
- Boys: Average 16.3 lbs / 26.0 in (7.4 kg / 66 cm)
- Girls: Average 15.2 lbs / 25.6 in (6.9 kg / 65 cm)
Sleep
- 12–15 hours per day (nighttime sleep 10–11 hours + 2–3 naps)
- Sleep may stabilize after the 4-month regression
- A dark room and white noise still help
Feeding
- 5–6 feeding sessions per day — short, efficient sessions
- Your baby may show interest in your food, but the WHO and AAP recommend waiting until around 6 months before introducing solids. Talk to your pediatrician about your individual baby
- Vitamin D: Continue with 400 IU (10 micrograms) daily
Good to Know
- Well-baby visit: Around 4–6 months, your pediatrician will check growth and development and give the next round of vaccinations (typically DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV — second doses)
- Teeth: Many babies get their first teeth between 4–7 months. Increased drooling and gnawing are common
- A cool teething ring can help relieve gum discomfort
Activity Tips
Grab-and-drop play: Give your baby a toy, let them drop it, and watch it fall. Repeat! Your baby is learning about gravity and cause and effect.
