How to count kicks
Pick a time when your baby is usually active. Lie on your side or sit comfortably. Tap for every kick, roll, or movement you feel. Most women reach 10 movements within 1-2 hours.
Contact your provider if concerned
Contact your midwife, doctor, or labor ward if your baby is moving less than usual. It is always better to call once too many. Learn more at countthekicks.org.
What is kick counting?
Kick counting is a simple method to monitor your baby's movements during pregnancy. By recording every kick, roll, or movement you feel, you build a picture of your baby's activity pattern. Most women use the "count to 10" method — you record the time it takes to feel 10 movements.
When should you start counting kicks?
According to ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), most women begin to feel fetal movements between weeks 18 and 20. First-time moms may feel it as a flutter or tingling. From week 24, movements become clear and are felt daily — a positive sign of your baby's wellbeing. Many providers recommend starting daily kick counts in the third trimester.
When to contact your healthcare provider
Contact your midwife, doctor, or labor ward immediately if your baby is moving less than usual, or if the movement pattern changes. According to the NHS and ACOG, decreased fetal movement should always be evaluated promptly. Trust your instincts — it is always better to call once too many than once too few.
